Secretary to the President Uday R. Seneviratne was sworn in at the presence of Sri Lankan Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya at 11.49 am. Rajapakse thanked the country's Buddhist clergy and the Sinhalese who won him the majority in the presidential election. He said that Buddhists and Sinhalese would be given first priority and that all communities would be equal to him as president even if minorities were not supported in the elections. Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the first person in the history of the country to be elected President of a government rather than an election to Parliament. His elder brother, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was the chief guest at the swearing-in ceremony. There is a possibility that Mahinda Rajapaksa will be appointed as the new Prime Minister of the country. Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the second person to be elected president of a powerful Rajapaksa family known as China.
